The mix, which features a total of 109 tracks from artists such as Above & Beyond, Kryder, Ahmed Helmy, Ben Hemsley, Ferry Corsten, Hardwell, Giuseppe Ottaviani, and Reinier Zonneveld, as well as van Buuren himself, was dropped on December 16th. This year's mix marks van Buuren's first release since being crowned the World's No. 1 Trance DJ in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs Poll for 2022. In a statement, van Buuren said, "The annual ASOT year mix album has always been a highlight for me and my fans; you could feel the harmony during the special four-hour livestream I did on Discord as I created the year mix." The mix, which is available on CD across two discs with 59 and 50 tracks each, was released on December 16th, just a year after the 2021 installment. Van Buuren, who was recently crowned the World's No. 1 Trance DJ in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs Poll for 2022, stated that the annual "A State of Trance" mix has always been a highlight for him and his fans, and added that it is important for people to focus on things that connect them rather than divide them, especially during these times.
